Consider the following example: An agent in an insurance company contact center takes a routine change of address call. In this case, the customer is calling to report that his daughter is leaving for college and that her address needs to be changed on his policy because she'll be based in campus rental housing. The car will be housed there and it will be driven around in a new area. Insurance companies like to know this kind of stuff.

Format incompatibility and data management are business problems rather than technical problems, said Antun Domic, general manager at Synopsys. Predictability, he said, is a much more serious technical problem — but one that's improving dramatically.

George Janac, president and founder of Silicon Navigator, agreed that good design is all about predictability. But with a disaggregated supply chain, he said, IP vendors wield a lot of control over design flows. What's key is not so much the format in which IP data is delivered, he said, as what's being done to organize the data.

IC CAD really needs to look a lot more like FPGA CAD, and why FPGA tools are so much easier to use is that the data is organized,” Janac said. He also said OpenAccess needs to be extended and personalized” to deal with additional data formats.

Ted Vucurevich, Cadence Design Systems CTO, noted that EDA customers today view integration as their job — and this has to change. What customers really want, he said, is differentiation through an integration ecosystem” in which some suppliers will integrate tools from other suppliers. This might result in design technology service providers” who offer support, integration, IT services, and hardware along with the software.

That requires new business models in which software is viewed as a service, and vendors engage in cross-licensing, Vucurevich said. Asked if Cadence would integrate Synopsys, Mentor or Magma tools, Vucurevich replied, you bet. Each environment has tools from different people, because there are certain things that certain people do better at any point in time.”

As he did in a recent EE Times Q&A interview, Vucurevich also called for a new integration architecture that includes an applications layer, control and coordination of engines, and peer to peer” re-entrant engines for such tasks as verifiers, modelers, analyzers, and synthesizers. This is, however, a decade long” vision, he acknowledged.

In the second panel discussion at the Integrated Design System Workshop, panelists took broad-ranging views. Yoshi Inoue, group manager for EDA methodology at Renesas, spoke of the need for a parallel” design system as opposed to today's serial approach. EDA vendor tools are very difficult to use in a parallel fashion, he said. But Renesas has made some progress by adding a base socket package” interface to OpenAccess, he noted.

Integration in the ESL world, said Pat Sheridan, product marketing manager at CoWare, means different things to different users. Software developers, he said, want to see a self contained software package” with controllability and observability. Hardware developers need processor models, interconnect models, and libraries and algorithms. Sheridan, executive director of Open SystemC International (OSCI), noted the progress that's been made with transaction-level modeling (TLM) interoperability in that group.

Pricing for the processor mesh chassis starts at less than $5,000, depending on volume and options. Delivery is six to eight weeks.

A pair of instrumentation amplifiers from Analog Devices, Inc. shows that precise, high-performance analog functions still play a critical role in instrumentation and data-acquisition applications. Such in-amps provide signal conditioning and amplification over large input voltage ranges, with well-defined dc accuracy and gain settings.

The AD8250, with digitally (or pin-strapped) settable gain of 1, 2, 5, and 10, and the similar AD8251 with gain of 1, 2, 4, and 8, operate on signals up to ±10V range, with a 12 MHz 3-dB bandwidth (at gain of 1), to accommodate fast-slewing signals. Common-mode rejection ratio is at least 80 dB to 10 kHz, also at unity gain, and 100 dB at gain of 10. The 30 V/μsec slew rate, and 0.5 μsec settling time to 0.01%, illustrate ac performance.

But a good in-amp is also defined by its dc specs. These devices promise input-referred noise below 15 nV per √Hz at gain of 10, gain drift better than 10 ppm/° C, input offset below 100 μV, coupled with maximum input offset drift of 1 μV/° C.
