Although most companies use on-site voicemail systems, and many individual users use answering machines or lightweight VM systems, the market for CO voicemail is strong. Among other benefits, central office voicemail can be accessed from remote locations, often with a toll-free call, and will answer calls while the subscriber’s line is in use. Users alsoget the quality and robustness of industrial-grade hardware and software, something often lacking in low-end customer-premise equipment.

A complete 1394-interface chipset includes an Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) link-layer device, and a 400-Mbit/s physical-layer device (PHY). TI's first-generation solution, introduced in 1994, was priced between $12 and $15. The second-generation solution, introduced in 1998, reduced the price to $8 from $10.

The third-generation chipset is expected to be priced under $6. Process improvements on the PHY scheduled for 2000 are expected to drop the price below $5, Trost said.

The device conforms to the latest versions of 1394 specifications, including IEEE 1394a 3.0, OHCI 1.0, and PCI 2.2. standards, as well as the PC98 and PC99 initiatives. The TSB12LV25 is available now in a 100-pin TQFP.

A bug within a small number of Intel Corp.'s Coppermine microprocessors has been found, and cautious OEMs are delaying some of their new PCs.

A spokesman for Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., said that the erratum is restricted to the desktop Coppermine microprocessor, although the company is investigating the Xeon workstation version of the Coppermine for the same defect.

Data integrity is not affected by the bug, unlike flaws found in previous Intel microprocessors that have since been corrected. Instead, a PC with a defective Coppermine chip may, at intermittent intervals, simply refuse to boot. At this point, Intel has merely associated the error with the Coppermine itself, and not the accompanying chipsets or other components. The error occurs in only 1% to 2% of the Coppermines that have shipped, the spokesman said.

According to Smith, the Intel 486 required 124 passive components. By contrast, the Pentium II needs 345, and Pentium IIIs gobble up 440.

Additionally, the number of passive components in automobiles is growing by nearly 16%, he said.

The resurgence of the Asian markets, particularly Japan, is helping to boost demand, said Sandy Beck, vice president of marketing at Kemet Electronics Corp., Greenville, S.C. Demand for all types of consumer-electronic products in these markets has been very strong since late last year, and the automotive and computer segments have been strong this year. Combined, these factors have created extremely strong demand for capacitors.”

GSM is driving sales in Europe, Southeast Asia has seen a recovery, and Japan's home market has been strengthened. So, worldwide, everybody's operating pretty well; and in Europe and North America, cell phones have been one of the leading drivers.”

Publicly held passives companies have posted double-digit top-line growth so far this year.
