Early on in the discussion, jackOfManyTrades pointed out that, though I called the category Language/communication”, language is in fact not an invention — it is innate. Though David Ashton rode gallantly to my defense, I had to admit to bad wording on my part. I think most everyone cut me some slack and took the category to mean all forms of communication, which I listed as including innovations such as the use of symbolism, writing, and numerals.

He told me that even as recently as 10 years ago he would see an average of three TVs a day (he also mentioned 80 TVs a month”) coming into his shop for repair. Now it’s just one TV every now and then. Fortunately, his house is paid for as is his truck. He lives about 40 miles away in Tennessee. The truck has 340,000+ miles on the clock. He can barely afford the gas to come into his shop. When the truck fails he doesn’t know what he’s going to do.

It’s getting close to the stage where he’s going to have to shut up shop and find some other employment. But he’s never worked for anyone else (apart from his father) and he doesn’t know how he would manage. He’s also a very shy person who finds it difficult to interface with people and strike up conversations, let alone friendships. His wife works with him and she expressed amazement that he was talking to me (people do – I don’t know why – maybe it’s just to stop me talking to them [grin]).

The end result is that I’m really happy I have my old TV to play with, but I’m really sad thinking about this guy. Also, I realize how amazingly lucky I am to be an engineer who can write (or maybe a writer who used to be an engineer), because it’s a cold, cold world out there when the skill you have is no longer required…

Perforated paper products As you can imagine, it would be somewhat inconvenient to have a computer that forgot everything it knew if its operator turned it off before stepping out for a bite of lunch. Similarly, imagine a programmer's frustration if, after spending countless hours using a Switch Panel to enter a program, the janitor carelessly disconnected the computer in order to vacuum the office. A few choice words would be the order of the day, let me tell you!

There were also a variety of other considerations. For example, since the early computers had very little memory anyway, it was necessary to have some mechanism to store large amounts of data outside of the machine's main memory. A program could then access and process small portions of the data on an as-needed basis. Also, if the operator had a number of different programs, but there wasn't enough memory to contain them all at the same time, then it was necessary to have some technique for storing the inactive programs. There was also the question of long-term archival; that is, being able to store programs and data for use sometime in the future.

Have you dismissed common-mode currents in a non-isolated power supply as a potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) source?

In high-voltage supplies, such as one you might find in an LED light bulb, you may find that you can’t. On inspection, it really is no different than an isolated supply. There will be stray capacitance to ground from switching nodes that will generate common-mode currents.

Figure 1 is a schematic of a LED power supply showing the parasitic capacitance that is the main cause of common-mode current in this buck regulator. It is the capacitance to earth from the switch node. It is surprising how small this capacitance can be and still create a problem.
