Chemical vapor deposition, by contrast, has proved a hot equipment market this year, and in the past few months sales of testers have moved sharply upward. Schumann said more testers are being sold in the United States and Europe, as logic manufacturers opt to keep the testing of complex devices close to the development engineers at home rather than at locations in Asia.

San Jose–Oct. 19, 1999–Chip Express Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) introduced the CX4000 series sea-of-modules ASIC family, dubbed Raptorex, fabricated in 0.25-µm, CMOS process.

The Raptorex features logic density of up to 1.7 million equivalent ASIC logic gates, with 608 kbit embedded configurable memory of synchronous SRAM, and four analog PLLs. Based on a module array architecture, the Raptorex CX4000 family offers a variety of I/O types, including CMOS, TTL, PCI, USB, GTL, differential inputs, and LVDS. Additionally, the product supports full-scan ATPG.

We are pleased to welcome TRW as a Rambus Validation Service provider,” said Laura Fleming, director, alliances and infrastructure for Rambus Inc.'s Computer and Memory Group. The expertise of TRW's Metrology Lab is well-suited to making the precise RIMM module validation measurements.”

Praegitzer Industries Inc.'s ill-fated plan to transform itself into a major PCB industry player ended Tuesday in an ironic twist as the company agreed to a purchase offer by Tyco International Ltd.

Tyco, a conglomerate with a big appetite for acquisitions and deep pockets to match, said yesterday it will pay approximately $72.2 million in cash, or $5.50 per share, for Praegitzer, ending a saga that's seen the Tualatin, Ore., company plunge from a potential PCB heavyweight to a featherweight ripe for acquisition.

By buying Praegitzer, Hamilton, Bermuda-based Tyco, already the world's biggest maker of electronic connectors, is extending its operations into the PCB industry and may be looking for additional acquisitions in the fast consolidating but still highly fragmented industry, according to analysts. Tyco said it will merge Praegitzer into its Printed Circuit Group after closing the transaction.

Praegitzer is an excellent fit with the Tyco Printed Circuit Group,” said Dennis Kozlowski, Tyco's chairman and chief executive, in a statement. First, the combination of Praegitzer's volume commercial production facilities with ours creates solid opportunities in the data networking and telecommunications market. Second, the addition of Praegitzer's quick-turn capability clearly positions TPCG as the leader in this attractive market.”

Praegitzer was virtually begging to be bought, according to Thomas Moro, an analyst at Advest Inc., Hartford, Conn. The company ran into difficulties with several acquisitions made in the last few years, particularly the Huntsville, Ala., facility it purchased from Intergraph Corp. in March 1998 but was forced to close. Praegitzer also closed its plant in Malaysia to lower operating costs.

The company, which has about $80 million in debt, recently filed its quarterly report late because of problems reaching an agreement with creditors.

Micron and Taiwanese chip makers blamed each other at an ITC hearing for ramping up huge DRAM production increases in a time of global glut.

Micron attorney Bonnie Byers said that just the increase in Taiwan's fab capacity last year equaled the entire production capacity of the U.S. DRAM industry. Sadler charged that not only were Taiwan's DRAM producers adding new fabs, but that they were increasing output through die shrinks by moving rapidly to 0.18-micron processing.

The Taiwanese firms rejoined that Micron itself was the biggest culprit in cranking up DRAM output. John Reilly, economic analyst with Nathan and Associates, claimed that in two years, from 1998 to 1999, Micron had jumped from 6% of the global DRAM market share to 15%, and will surge past Samsung Electronics Co. this year to become the largest supplier of 64-megabit DRAMs in the world.

Next year, Micron will produce two-and-and-half times more 64-Mbit DRAMs than Samsung,” Reilly said.

ITC vice-commissioner Marcia Miller said it appeared that far from being injured by any of Taiwan's DRAM dumping, Micron is coming out on top” in the global market.
