MUNICH, Germany — Applied Materials announced it plans to take over HCT Shaping Systems SA (Cheseaux, Switzerland). The move is intended to strengthen Applied's position in the photovoltaics business.

HCT sells wire saw systems for the production of wafers based on crystalline silicon (c-Si) substrates, predominantly used in the solar cell industry. For the company, Applied Materials will pay about $475 million in cash.

The acquisition of HCT fits nicely into our strategy to reduce the costs per watt in PV applications through the use of c-Si and thin film technology”, said Applied Materials CEO Michael Splinter in a statement. Presently, c-Si is the technology used for the production of 90 percent of all solar cells. With HCT on board, we significantly can strengthen our position in this market.” The HCT technology will enable Applied to reach a new quality level in the solar wafer production, he added.

HCT's product spectrum includes solutions for cutting ingots as well as slurry recovery. HCT's wafering systems can cut ingots into thin substrates used for the production of c-Si based solar wafers. While polysilicon shortages caused the costs for raw materials to skyrocket, the machines of the Swiss company enable wafer manufacturers to significantly reducing the material usage and thus the silicon demand, Applied Materials said.

Our strategy for the solar market aims at reducing the costs per watt. We achieve this target by reducing the silicon quantity in grams per watt”, explained Mark Pinto, General Manager of Applied's PV business. HCT's thickness reducing technology is decisive for improving our materials usage efficiency. It makes a perfect match with our ATON c-Si wafer coating systems. The combination of these two technologies will enable our customers to increase their productivity and reduce their manufacturing costs.”

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. It is expected to be closed in Q4 of Applied's FY 2007.

With the acquisition of HCT Shaping Systems, Applied continues its strategy to invest into the PV market. Within the past 15 months, the company already has invested $3 million in PV wafer manufacturer Solaicx and has taken over Applied Films.

LONDON — Contract electronics manufacturing services company Barric Ltd. (Diss, England) has announced a plan to open a PCB rework and ball grid array repair laboratory.

The lab is set to undertake the test, inspection and repair of surface mount and BGA-based electronic systems for technology manufacturers across Europe. The facility is being equipped with an x-ray machine, a microscope, automated optical inspection systems and boundary scan technology for the electrical testing of BGA devices.

The Intel cables integrate the company's optical transceivers directly into their connectors. The cables are also 84 percent lighter, 83 percent smaller and have lower bit-error rates and conversion latencies than the copper alternative. The smaller size helps support better airflow and thus easier cooling for servers.

Clusters require massive amounts of cabling,” said Willis. When you need a thousand cables, that's a lot of weight and a lot of blocked airflow in and around systems,” he added.

At the International Supercomputing Conference 2007 in Dresden this week (June 26-29) a handful of companies will demonstrate a large cluster using the new Intel cables. They include Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Mellanox Technologies, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.

Willis said at short distances the new optical cables will carry an undisclosed premium over 24-gauge copper. However, at longer distances they will be the same price.

The copper cables typically list for about $160 for 10 meters. Intel's optical cables will be in production before the end of the year.
