General-purpose processors continue to gain share against ASICs in network routers and switches, but concerns about performance, cost, and the long-term viability of suppliers have prevented OEMs from switching to standard-product solutions as quickly as they would like.

A pivotal Microsoft move in this regard was to seal its relationship with ARM, whose RISC-based cores are found in more than two-thirds of all multimedia handheld applications.
