The Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector suffered an operating loss of $131 million vs. a profit of $128 million in the first quarter of 2000. Without releasing specific figures, Motorola said its chip orders were down very significantly” in the Americas and Europe, down significantly” in Asia/Pacific, and up slightly” in Japan.

Some engineering universities have their own radio stations. MIT has WMBR. (Did you know it was originally WTBS until Ted Turner bought the station new equipment in exchange for the call letters?) But to my knowledge, WMBR doesn’t broadcast anything about engineering.

Enter Texas A&M and its weekly engineering radio show, Engineering Works. On the air and online since 2003, Engineering Works presents a weekly story about some aspect of engineering. The story is broadcast every Wednesday at 7:30 AM Central Time on Texas A&M’s radio station, KAMU-FM 90.9, and archived online, both in text and as mp3s for listening or downloading.

So what does an engineering radio clip cover? Well just about everything. Here are a few examples.

TI's problems are directly tied to the drop off in the cellular telephone business. Companies such as Motorola and Ericsson consume a large portion of its output of DSPs.

TI is to reduce capital expenditure this year by 10% to $1.8bn and cut research-and-development spending by 5.9% to $1.6bn.

Researchers from Infineon Technologies' Corporate Research Centre have developed 1300nm vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with power outputs in a range suitable for data transmission over a distance of 20km.

Until now, 1300nm lasers were only available in edge-emitting laser technology and VCSEL only operated up to the 850nm range.

Infineon's 1300nm device can be modulated up to 10GHz, providing the required output power for fibre optic transmission systems operating at OC-192 data rates (10Gbit/s).
