The addition of C++ eliminates much of the need for assembly-language skills and improves time-to-market for users of ADI digital signal processors, said Russ Rivin, manager of the company's advanced development tools group. Designers with assembly-language programming skills are increasingly rare, and intimacy with the proliferation of complex DSP architectures is even more rare, he said.

With the addition of a C++ compiler to its DSP programming tools, ADI joins very long-instruction-word (VLIW) advocates Texas Instruments and StarCore, the joint venture of Motorola and Lucent Technologies, in their efforts to optimize programmers' skills in the creation of new programs for next-generation communications and multimedia devices like third-generation cell phones.

Both the TI TMS320C6000 series processors and the StarCore SC-140 use arrays of parallel-processing units, and rely on C compilers to schedule processor resources and build parallel assembly-level instructions for the machinery to execute. Prior to its C++ announcement, ADI had maintained that assembly-language programming provided the best means of extracting performance from new DSPs.

The ADI TigerSharc is a superscalar processor that resembles a VLIW in its ability to handle multiple data types. The Sharc family consists of 32-bit processors for floating-point math. The ADSP-218X and -219X are fixed-point devices with large internal memory space. Assembly-language programmers must be familiar with the register locations and instruction-scheduling mechanisms.

O'Donnell will be the first VSIA president to come from a third-party IP supplier.
