Most people who implement multiple Xtensa processors on a chip don't do multiprocessing in the sense that they need hardware-managed coherency,” said Roddy.

Likewise, AMCC director of marketing Robin Melnick has turned away potential software partners, finding in-house tools to be sufficient. One software vendor, which Melnick wouldn't name, had scored an alliance with Intel and was looking to do the same with AMCC, but found there was no work to be done. The problem they had set out to solve was one we didn't have,” Melnick said.

That could be a crucial point, because the futures of Consystant, Teja and other software vendors could ride not on their support for Intel, but on their ability to find other network processor allies. And if such tools are truly necessary, the silicon vendor has to bring them in-house,” Melnick said. You've seen it in the DSP community. When there were deficiencies, up would sprout somebody to fill in the hole. Eventually, the vendor would buy it, or it would go away. In the network processor market it's the same thing — there are holes to fill.”

Would Intel consider hardwiring a few functions? The answer is yes, Corgan said. Time will point out certain functions required of every net processor in almost every system — and those will be obvious targets for hardwiring, he said. Where Intel differs from Motorola, though, is in the level of function that gets hardwired. On those [C-Port] devices, I see larger functional units hard-coded than what I'm talking about,” Corgan said.

TABY, Sweden — Micronic Laser Systems AB, a maker of laser pattern generators used for photolithography masks and in the display industry, has reduced its sales forecast for 2002 so that it will be about the same as 2001, about $75 million.

An earlier forecast from the Swedish company was based on an expected recovery within the semiconductor industry. Recent market research indicates that this recovery has been further delayed, which will affect the technology investments for photo-masks, the company said. It also said that the shipment of a second Sigma-system is likely to be delayed until the fourth quarter of 2002.

Micronic shipped on schedule during the second quarter the first Sigma-system for production of advanced photo-masks to DuPont Photo-masks, one of the industry's leading manufacturers of advanced photo-masks,” said Sven Lofquist, president and chief executive officer of Micronic Laser Systems, in a statement.

Lofquist continued: It is obvious that the industry now is facing a difficult economical situation that only can be solved via cost-effective technology in the photo-mask production process as well as for prototype manufacturing of semiconductor components through programmable steppers where the pattern is transferred direct to the semiconductor component without the use of photo-masks.”

DALLAS, Texas — Texas Instruments is planning to make a so-called single-chip” cellular telephone integrating voice and multimedia capabilities sometime in 2004. The company said executives would discuss the development as part of the company's silicon integration vision for wireless handsets and PDAs at several conferences today (September 4, 2002) and over the next few days.

Tom Engibous, TI's chairman, president and chief executive officer, was expected to include the plan in a keynote address at a Salomon Smith Barney's Tech2002 Industry Conference in New York today (September 4, 2002).

The inventory bubble of the past two years forced suppliers to implement supply chain reforms such as vendor-managed inventory and better forecasting systems, so far with mixed results.

VMI programs just transfer responsibility for the inventory,” Denslinger said. What will improve inventory management is better forecasting.”

Smith agreed, adding, I have to believe there's better inventory control with the new software programs, but it's the numbers that go into these systems we have to be more tactical in understanding.”

Kemet's Beck said that most recent forecasts have been fairly accurate, but he noted, Today, nobody has an incentive to overstate what they want [sales] to be.”

Contributing to suppliers' malaise is the move by OEMs and EMS providers to continue moving manufacturing to low-cost regions like China. They are opting to work with regional suppliers like Taiwan-based Yageo Corp., forcing U.S. suppliers to recoup lost sales.
