The Alliance is looking to repeat that pattern with 802.11a devices, many of which have appeared this year. Testing will be conducted at the organization's laboratory in San Jose, Calif. Products that receive certification will be granted a Wi-Fi Certified” seal of interoperability.

He says the technology is suited to large area displays with high resolution.

He said: It is still difficult to get a flat panel display device that meets all of the requirements for advanced information displays. Our device has great potential as an emissive flat panel display, since the characteristic features meet all the major requirements.”

The results are presented in Applied Physics Letters.

Embattled telecom equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. today unveiled another raft of reorganization measures that includes the elimination of an additional 10,000 positions and the possible closure of some product lines as the company concentrates on a handful of core businesses.

Lucent, which was expecting to post a loss before charges of 45 cents a share in the fiscal 2002 fourth quarter ending Sept. 30, said it now sees a loss of at least 65 cents a share for the three-month period. Revenue will decline between 20% and 25% sequentially to $2.95 billion, near the top of its $2.5 billion to $3 billion estimate.

Despite the market challenges, we intend to return to profitability in fiscal 2003 and we are taking more aggressive restructuring actions to bring our breakeven down even further,” said Patricia Russo, Lucent's chief executive, in a statement. We will play to our core strengths in optical, circuit and packet switching, mobility and network operations software, and increase our focus on services.”

Lucent and Nortel, its Canadian rival, have implemented several job cuts, plant closures and product realignment over the course of the last two years as their core markets plunged into negative growth with the end of the last high tech boom.

Nortel had earlier said it will cut 7,000 jobs and today disclosed that it will focus on a breakeven revenue target of $2.4 billion.

This breakeven model is expected to be in place by the second quarter of 2003,” Nortel said in a statement.

Steve Higgins, director, business continuity with data storage products firm EMC (Hopkinton, MA; www.emc.com), knows of New York City-based securities firms that split call centers between different locations, such as midtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey City. EMC had 76 customers in and around the World Trade Center.

If disaster strikes again, by diversifying their locations, the companies will not be as vulnerable to communications and transportation outages,” he says.

Backing Up Apps

Backing up data on-site and off-site for remote access has long been a common practice. But more call centers' IT departments are backing up applications like CTI, CRM, e-mail, Internet and customer support that carry and tap into the data for quick recovery and use.

IT departments are beginning to recognize that continuing to serve customers with these applications, no matter where the call center is, is just as critical to their companies' profits and survival as backing up the information the call centers collect,” says Higgins.
