Sony digital cameras, camcorders, and camera-equipped PC notebooks are being expanded with wireless links. The com-pany's PlayStation 2 electronic game player already has Internet access. The next-generation PlayStation III will also link with AOL and instant messaging. Broadcast equipment and content from Sony Pictures and Sony Audio feed the network.

Unwilling to miss out on any part of the broadband network, Sony has its own ISP in Japan with 1.6 million subscribers and a newly launched DSL service, both expected to expand outside the home base. Not content just to enable consumers to use the Web, Sony plans to provide Internet offerings such as interactive banking and Internet music services.

Underpinning Sony's Global Network are its semiconductor and display manufacturing operations. Sony and U.S.-based Universal Display Corp. are jointly developing organic electroluminescent displays. And for several years, Sony has been working with Candescent Technology Inc. to bring field emission display panels to market.

EMS connection

Sony is also breaking ground in Japan by becoming one of the first major OEMs in that country to sell a local manufacturing plant to a foreign EMS provider. Late last year, contract manufacturer Solectron Corp. agreed to acquire a Sony facility in Miyagi, Japan, that makes auto audio and satellite navigation systems. The deal also involved the sale of a second Sony plant in Taiwan.
