Security concerns with Bluetooth involve the quality of the cryptographic algorithm, key management and authentication protocols. As important as these are, however, they are not the largest areas of concern.

Before passing judgment on the quality of Bluetooth security, we need to understand what security is and its purpose. Let us begin by examining some basic requirements for a secure, wire-free system and then compare our findings with what Bluetooth currently has to offer.

A security policy is a well-defined set of rules that determines what access a subject has and to which objects. Subjects are people and objects are defined by what the system protects-that is, the data maintained by the computer system. The set of security rules must be well-defined and deterministic. Toshiba and Infineon Technologies AG announced that they plan to collaborate on interfacing Infineon's dual-mode UMTS/GSM baseband IC and Toshiba's MPEG-4 codec, which will enable transmission, decoding, and encoding of MPEG-4 video on cellular handsets.

Analog Devices announced that, as expected, it will incorporate its new Frio DSP, co-developed with Intel Corp., in its SoftFone baseband processor for 2.5G and 3G handsets, replacing the ADSP218x now used in the platform.

Depending on the exact form the handset eventually takes, the Frio will be combined with an ARM7 to create a communications processor. For the companion applications processor, Analog Devices expects to use a combination of the Frio and ARM, the Frio alone, or even a stand-alone RISC processor, Grant said.
