Discounted advance pricing is still available for EE Live! 2014 — attendees can save as much as $100 on an All Access Pass or a pass to the Embedded Systems Conference and Engineering Summits. Follow updates about other EE Live! programs, sessions, and announcements on the conference’s social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+.

The features enable the MCU to be used in multi-sensor environments for system connectivity, data transfer, and HID interaction. HID and communication device class support makes this a good choice for industrial control applications such as USB instrumentation and smart metering systems.

What a week for industrial MCU announcements from Embedded World 2014. Infineon joined in on the buzz, announcing new packaging variants and a free ARM MDK development tool with its XMC100 MCUs, now available in volume production. The MCUs deliver 32-bit performance at 8-bit prices and use the ARM Cortex-M0 processor.

In the past, industrial apps primarily used 8-bit MCUs. Now, however, so much more is available at substantial higher performance, and at the same price. The XMC1000 provides ease of use, high-performance mixed signal peripherals, and true industrial operating performance. Target applications for the MCU family include: sensors and actuators, LED lighting, digital power conversion, and simple motor drives.

Highly compact Very Thin Quad Flat No Leads (VQFN) packaging for the XMC1000 feature 24 and 40 pins. The VQFN-24 is only 4 mm x 4 mm yet it includes up to 200KB flash memory and application-optimized control peripherals — just what motor drives, sensor, and actuator applications need. The MCUs are also available in TSSOP packages with 16-28 and 38 pins. Volume production in TSSOP package variants with 16, 28, and 38 pins is already underway. Samples for VQFN-24 packages are currently available. Series production for both packages VQFN-24 and VQFN-40 is due to start in the fourth quarter.

Boot kits are available for simple and low-cost evaluation. Comprehensive application kits for the XMC1000 target applications are also available. A range of powerful software tools and ready-made software solutions from third-party suppliers and Infineon supports the devices.

Infineon also licensed the Silicon Vendor Edition” of the ARM MDK, which can be downloaded free — Click here. In addition, DAVE is a free, integrated development platform for XMC microcontrollers. An application library can be developed quickly using DAVE to abstract hardware-related tasks. DAVE also offers middleware solutions.

Printed text can be a curse to some people. Vision problems, dyslexia, and cognitive deficiencies may put up a barrier that’s difficult to breach. This project out of the MIT Media Lab aims to use wearables to overcome reading problems.

The firm’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions” report also goes on to offer a series of similar forecasts for mobile and telecommunications devices. It sees, for instance, a converged living room” emerging as a plateau emerges in global sales of smartphones, tablets, PCs, TV sets, and video game consoles will surpass $750 billion in 2014. That’s a $50 billion increase from last year and almost a 100% increase from four years ago. That said, shipments are expected to grow at a slower pace compared to that of ten years ago, and achieve a top figure of approximately $800 billion per year.

Similarly, phablets — smartphones with 5- to 7-inch screens — are increasing steadily, but the report suggests that they will soon near their peak. Shipments of phablets will make up a quarter of total smartphones shipped, which is about 300 million units, twice the figure from last year and 10 times the figure from the year before that. However, beyond that first set of positive numbers, 2014 may be the year that phablets plateau, according to the report, with only some end customers interested in purchasing a device with such a large form factor.

Finally, ruggedized devices are expected to fall in price to $250. These devices are used by field force workers and involve certain tasks including highway inspections and workload-intensive outdoor activities. Generally priced at a higher figure, it is thus possible that we will see, if the report is accurate, a decline to a more reasonable price for these systems.

SAN FRANCISCO — Verizon Communications will purchase the assets of Intel Media, a division dedicated to the development of cloud-based TV products and services, Verizon and Intel officials announced Jan. 21. The price was not disclosed.
