When agents click on an icon in the Media Interaction Batch Navigation toolbar, Genesys Contact Navigator 6.5 displays screen templates specific to each message type. For example, agents can view call scripts when they answer phone calls or, as shown on the previous page, Web pages when they chat with on-line customers. A new icon appears in the menu whenever agents receive new messages. The icons also include timers that show how much time agents spend helping each customer.

In addition to offering application-specific design libraries for components such as custom array waveguides and other basic photonic building blocks, Intel will provide customer-specified services for highly specialised devices and functions.

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Atheros Communications Inc. said Monday (March 11) that it is sampling a wireless LAN chip set that supports both IEEE 802.11a and .11b wireless LAN standards and is capable of supporting the 802.11g specification once it is finalized later this year.

The announcement follows Systemonic Technology's disclosure that it would sample an 802.11a/b combination chip set in the second quarter, and Intersil Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc.'s announced collaboration on a client adapter for 802.11g.

Atheros' three-piece all-CMOS AR5001X chip set is comprised of separate 5-GHz and 2.45-GHz RF front-ends and a single media-access controller (MAC). Atheros also introduced two other chips along with the combination chip set: the AR5001A, an advanced version of the company's established two-piece 802.11a chip set; and the AR5001AP, a two-chip 802.11a access-point. The AR5001A 5-GHz-only solution will be priced under $35, while the AR5001X combo chip set will be under $39.

Atheros said its announcement is timed to meet accelerating demand for WLAN devices despite security concerns and questions about the legality of 802.11g. With many Eurocentric features, the Atheros chip set faces an uphill battle in a European market that has so far refused to accept 802.11a solutions.

Many of these issues have been addressed in the latest chip set, said Rich Redelfs, president and chief executive officer of Atheros (Sunnyvale, Calif.). For security, the AR5001X CMOS chip set and the AR5001A device come with temporal key integrity protocol (TKIP) and advanced encryption standard (AES) features, plus 802.1x support for authentication and virtual private networking (VPN) support for application security.

Both AES and TKIP are likely to be incorporated into the IEEE 802.11i Task Group's enhancements,” said Redelfs. When they're finalized, any changes can be added to our chip set via a simple firmware upgrade.”

To make the AR5001X chip set 802.11g-capable, Atheros originally went shopping for an RF partner, but found none that could meet our power/performance requirements,” Redelfs said. The company then developed the part in-house.

In the end, Redelfs said development of the .11g device was easy compared to the .11a. We had OFDM [orthogonal frequency-division modulation] already developed at 5 GHz, so meeting the front-end linearity and performance demands of OFDM at 2.45 GHz wasn't that difficult.” By definition, a device that is 802.11g-capable is also 802.11b-compliant, he said.

The alpha tool has been up and running at Nikon's facility in Kumagaya, Japan, since last year. The Japanese lithography giant and IBM claimed that they have made substantial progress on the technology.

The EPL tool is no longer a curiosity item,” declared Michael Gordon, senior engineer at IBM's Microelectronics Division in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. It's a real system,” Gordon said in a presentation at SPIE here on Thursday.

IBM developed and has refined the optics for the EB Stepper. IBM's optical system, dubbed Prevail, has demonstrated static images at the 80-nm (0.08-micron) to the 60-nm (0.06-micron) nodes. We have demonstrated images at 50-nm,” Gordon said.

In a separate paper, Nikon indicated that it is merging some the technologies from its exiting tools into the EB Stepper, according to officials from the Tokyo-based company. The company is leveraging its experience in electron-beam, metrology, and, of course, optical lithography, said Kazuki Suzuki, R&D manager of the IC Equipment Division at Nikon Corp.

Nikon is also developing another and rival next-generation lithography technology, called extreme ultravoilet (EUV).
