Colorado Springs, C.O. —EM Microelectronic announces the EM4569, a 125-kHz, 512-bit contactless identification CMOS RFID IC intended for use in electronic read/write RF transponders. The EM4569 offers several data rate and data encoding options available at a decreased level of power consumption. This passive RFID IC is optimized for high-performance, cost savings, and increased reading distance, making it well suited for animal identification.

The device is the enlarged pad version of the company's EM4469. The enlarged pads allow for direct antenna connection via bumps deposited on the enlarged pads, so it is possible to directly solder the wire of the antenna on the EM4569 without printed circuit board (PCB) support.

The IC has demonstrated performance in long range detection. In a recent field trial using long-range animal readers, the EM4569 embedded in an ear-tag format was read at a distance of up to one meter, considerably more than other conventional RFID tags,” explains Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Microelectronic. The device is compliant with ISO 11784/5 and has bi-phase RF/32.

The decision by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) to end its Advanced Lithography Program will affect 10 companies and research labs working on maskless lithography and three entities working on imprint technology.

In the maskless arena, the affected companies and labs are ASML Holding NV, Lucent Technologies, Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines, Arradiance Inc., LumArray Inc., Novelx Inc., Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Stanford University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Harvard University.

In imprint lithography, Darpa ALP funding will end for Nanonex Inc., Molecular Imprints Inc. and Northwestern University.
